AMERICAN
CONFERENCE
Arguably the toughest conference in 2001...three strong teams
that all could make the playoffs.
Blind Squirrels | ||
Owners: | Erik Spraklen, Richard Krautsack
In 2000: | American Conference Champ (13-2, best overall record), Point Total champ (2460), Power Rankings champ (36.1), #4 in Efficiency (86.9%). Made playoffs, SFFL Superbowl runner-up.
Notes: | Phenomenal 2000 season will be hard to top, and they won't with their draft lineup. However, they could come close...a good backfield, two potentially stud QBs and a new partner for Erik should help them repeat as American Conference champs in 2001. Don't start doing the Superbowl shuffle just yet, as there is some better competition this year. |
G-Men | ||
Owners: | Peter Gamoff, Sujit Sheth
In 2000: | Third place in Federal Conference (7-6), #9 in Point Totals (1818), #8 in Power Rankings (-11.1), #7 in Efficiency (83.9%). Did not make playoffs.
Notes: | Uh...well...they do have Peyton Manning. Outside of that there's lots of question marks on this team, especially at the running back position. Wait, but they have that one kicker...oh, never mind. These guys were a surprise semi-success last year, but nobody will be fooled in 2001...not even themselves. At best they'll be a notch above Toilet Bowl qualifications. |
High Tech Rednecks | ||
Owners: | Russ Fyfe, Dave Bockman
In 2000: | Second place in American Conference (7-7), #6 in Point Totals (2014), #11 in Power Rankings (-16.9), #8 in Efficiency (83.5%). Made playoffs, lost in first round.
Notes: | Gotta hand it to these geeks, they put together another potentially tough, playoff-bound team. Favre, Faulk and the Baltimore D will be huge this year and may make up for their current lack of depth. The question is, will it be enough, as this division may be too tough for them to finish higher than third. Good enough for postseason? Perhaps... |
Venwaz Balls | ||
Owners: | Chris Stevens, Kenji Kusumoto
In 2000: | Third place in American Conference (5-8), #10 in Point Totals (1750), #9 in Power Rankings (-16.2), #3 in Efficiency (87.0%). Did not make playoffs.
Notes: | Hoping to make up for a miserable past season, they're loaded in the RB and QB position. The question will be if they can get decent production out of their WRs and the dog D's on their roster. If so, they could be battling the Squirrels for the conference title...if not, they'll be battling the Rednecks for a playoff spot. |
NATIONAL
CONFERENCE
Appears to be somewhat unbalanced between "good" and
"bad"...should produce two playoff teams.
Assholes | ||
Owners: | Kevin Fletcher, Jeff Sneed
In 2000: | Third place in National Conference (6-7), #3 in Point Totals (2118), #3 in Power Rankings (12.8), #5 in Efficiency (85.8%). Did not make playoffs.
Notes: | They're really trying to break out of a bad streak - two straight losing seasons doesn't sit well with this former powerhouse team. This may be the year they return to respectability. A couple possible QB gems, a strong running game and above average special teams should have the 'Holes challenging for the top spot in the National. |
Cyclones | ||
Owners: | Dave Halffield, Paul Pasternock
In 2000: | Last place in National Conference (4-10), #11 in Point Totals (1747), #12 in Power Rankings (-25.2), #11 in Efficiency (75.2%). Toilet Bowl Champ.
Notes: | They must be happy with their "bowl victory" from last season as they've done little to improve. Such a shame they can't play four RBs in a game...if so they'd have a chance at perhaps finishing above third in this conference. Questionable QBs and virtually no receiver help spells their doom. Look out below, way below... |
Painful Rectal Itches | ||
Owners: | Gene Dorsch, Bryan McGonigal (commish)
In 2000: | Second place in National Conference (9-6, third best record overall), #8 in Point Totals (1965), #6 in Power Rankings (-0.6), #9 in Efficiency (81.4%). Made playoffs, lost in semi-finals.
Notes: | The usual unbiased opinion of my own team states that PRI has improved. Depth in the QB, WR and special teams department may make up for a questionable RB group, which could go either way. Being in a not-so-strong conference also doesn't hurt. Playoff bound and beyond...again. |
Ruffy | ||
Owners: | Brett Hellstrom, Larry Rebodos
In 2000: | Last place in Federal Conference (5-8), #4 in Point Totals (2074), #5 in Power Rankings (5.3), #6 in Efficiency (85.3%). Did not make playoffs.
Notes: | Feh. Even these perennial bottom feeders couldn't screw up the first pick, and Culpepper will put up some good numbers. Too bad he'll have little support, as the running game is virtually nonexistent (any starters?) and the somewhat decent receiving corps won't carry the entire load. Just to hit the same crappy mark as last year will take a minor miracle. |
FEDERAL
CONFERENCE
Up-for-grabs conference, will be a wild ride to the top...which
may be the only playoff spot left available.
Cheesy-Poofs | ||
Owners: | Marshall Buchanan, Dan Heney
In 2000: | Federal Conference Champ (7-7), #5 in Point Totals (2043), #4 in Power Rankings (12.2), #10 in Efficiency (79.5%). Made playoffs, lost in semi-finals.
Notes: | Defending conference champs will need some big breaks to repeat. At first glance they appear to have a decent starting lineup that can compete, but lack overall depth. A second look makes you wonder where they'll get their points. Could be a low scoring year for the Poofs, which is typically a very bad thing in our league. |
Dukes | ||
Owners: | Alan Rasnic, Tom Rasnic
In 2000: | Second place in Federal Conference (7-7), #7 in Point Totals (2006), #7 in Power Rankings (-0.8), Efficiency champ (89.5%). Made playoffs, lost in first round.
Notes: | These guys are always so up and down they're hard to pinpoint. There's probably no middle ground this year...they're either going to be 'da Bomb or just bomb out. It will really depend on how some of those overlooked players (Holmes, Conway, etc.) perform, which we'll find out soon enough. Well, if they are to thrive they're in the right conference. |
Pull My Finger | ||
Owners: | Dave Mansfield, Steve Lemke
In 2000: | Last place in American Conference (2-12, worst record overall), #12 in Point Totals (1732), #10 in Power Rankings (-16.3), #12 in Efficiency (73.7%). Did not make playoffs & Toilet Bowl loser.
Notes: | The stink you smelled last year was from this team, but they appear to have cleaned up nicely for the new season. Relatively balanced and sporting some potent WRs, PMF should be far from the toilet and will surprise some teams. Could be most improved of the season (not hard after 2000) but will be a longshot to win the conference title. |
VEGA | ||
Owners: | Marc Butvilas, Justin Convey
In 2000: | SFFL CHAMPION! National Conference champ (11-4, second best record overall), #2 in Point Totals (2308), #2 in Power Rankings (20.8), #2 in Efficiency (88.0%).
Notes: | Two-Time defending champs are always hard to bet against, but a three-peat may be out of the question. Kurt Warner should be better this year and Marvin Harrison is always a threat, unfortunately their unusually weak RB positions may drag them down. Won't be nearly as dominant as last season, but will probably still find themselves looking down at other Federal teams by years end. |
